Friday is National Popcorn Day!! Anyone who knows me knows that I have an unnatural obsession with popcorn, so this might as well be my favorite holiday of the year. I obviously had to celebrate it, so I made you all this colorful RAINBOW POPCORN! You’re welcome. Best of all, this particular popcorn recipe is light, airy and salty but butter-free. I know, that’s weird for a Club Crafted recipe isn’t it? Nonetheless, it’s delicious!
Let me let you in on a little fact…Andrew makes the BEST popcorn. In fact, his popcorn is so good that we *joke* I’m only dating him for his popcorn-making abilities. He’s that good, so he let me in on his best tips for making perfect, light popcorn at home and now I’m sharing those tips with you all.

Making this pretty rainbow popcorn is actually very, very simple and won’t affect the taste of your popcorn so, yes, you can use any popcorn recipe you’d like. I do recommend a light popcorn recipe so that the starting color is similar to these white puffs rather than yellow-stained popcorn. Granted, that movie theatre-style popcorn is equally delicious. Then you simply PAINT the popcorn with edible color spray! Yes, it’s that easy.
- White popcorn (fresh is best!)
- Edible color spray, rainbow of colors
- Lipped jelly roll tray
- Aluminum foil
Step 1: Make the popcorn according to my recipe below or your favorite recipe. You may also use bagged popcorn if desired.
Step 2: Cover a large lipped tray entirely with aluminum foil. Pour the popcorn on top and spread it out in an even layer. For best results, try to keep it to one layer so the kernels are not stacked on top of each other.
Step 4: Let sit for about 2 minutes for the color to set in and then scoop into containers to serve.
Seriously, this is the prettiest popcorn I’ve ever seen. I promptly ate the entire batch…by myself…after I swore I wasn’t hungry. If popcornaholics are a thing, I’m destined to be their leader ? Brb, off to make more!
- Amish kernels
- Vegetable oil (or canola)
- Large heavy-bottomed pot with lid
- Oven mitts
- Edible spray color, rainbow colors
- Large jelly roll tray
- Aluminum foil
- Cover a large lipped tray entirely with aluminum foil and set aside
- In a large heavy-bottomed pot, pour just enough vegetable oil to evenly coat the bottom and heat on medium heat
- Pour a thin layer of kernels over the vegetable oil as it heats. No kernels should overlap
- Place lid on top and wait until you hear the first "pop"
- Protecting your hands with oven mitts, lift the pot just above the stove burner and shake lightly as the popcorn continues to pop. This keeps the popcorn moving so that it does not burn
- Continue shaking often until you can count 1-2-3 between popping sounds; then immediately pour the finished popcorn onto the prepared tray
- Spread the popcorn out in an even layer and salt to desired taste. For best results, try to keep it to one layer so the kernels are not stacked on top of each other
- In a well-ventilated area (such as outside), spray the color in sections. It’s OK to overlap the colors slightly, and you don’t necessarily want to cover it entirely in paint or it won’t dry
- Let sit for about 2 minutes for the color to set in and then scoop into containers to serve.
- Note that every type of popcorn kernel you use may pop differently. Alter instructions as needed.
